What is a swarm?

Swarming is how honeybee colonies reproduce. If a hive is healthy and survives the winter it will split into two colonies in spring. Last year's Queen and half the colony will migrate looking for a new location to establish a new hive.

A swarm is a large ball of bees, thousands of bees hanging from a branch or on the side of a car or house. The location is random and there is no wax or honey visible. A swarm will appear out of nowhere in about ten minutes, and may leave as quickly.

Are they dangerous?

No! Swarming honeybees are very gentle and docile here in NY. They don't intend to interfere with humans, so if you just leave them alone, they will return the favor.

We understand that it may be very scary, especially if they land near you or on your home, but they don't mean to bother you.

Will they leave on their own?

If you have an actual honeybee swarm, and the weather is nice, they will leave on their own, but where will they go? On Staten Island we try to remove as many swarms as possible before they establish a new hive. Loss of habitat is a huge problem from all bees in urban neighborhoods. If they move into a house or a car, they will become a dangerous, expensive problem. We suggest that all swarms be removed if it is safe to do so, many people miss identify other things as swarms, so it is best to get a professional option.
